Dutch journalist 3rd place in European Journalist Award

Berlin, 18 March 2009. Dutch Volkskrant-journalist Rob Vreeken became third in winning the European Journalist Award for Excellence in Journalism’. This new European Journalist Award is a tribute to journalists who by their articles contribute to achieving the Millennium Development Goals related to health.

The competition was open to journalists from The Netherlands, Poland, Germany, Spain and Austria who write about Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, and poverty alleviation in developing countries. The award has been set up in the framework of the project ‘Reproductive Health for All’ in which NGOs from the above mentioned countries cooperate. The award ceremony took place in the building of the ‘Vetretung der Europäischen Kommission in Deutschland.’

First prize went to the German article of Corinna Arndt ‘When children are not the future’ published 4 March 2008 in ‘Der Zeit’. Mary Kreutzer and Corinna Milborn became second with an article on trafficing women. This article was published in the Austrian Newspaper Der Standard: Album on 29 March 2008.

Rob Vreeken writes about Reproductive Rights sinds the ICPD in 1994. His wining article – published 5 April 2008 - Beyond Drudgery and Childbearing: a Report on Self-Assertive Muslim Women – was the introduction of a series on women in the muslim world. The series will be published in a book which will be in the shops next year.
