12 November: launch of the ‘State of the World Population 2008’During a press conference on November 12th 2008 Mr. Jacobi received on behalf of Minister Koenders the first copy of the UNFPA report State of the World Population 2008 from Mrs. Mane, Deputy Executive of UNFPA. This year’s report is titled: ‘Achieving Common Ground: Culture, Gender, and Human Rights’. Despite international agreements, including most recently the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the report points out that gender inequality remains widespread and deep-rooted in many cultures. Culturally sensitive approaches are essential for reaching the MDGs, says the report, including Goal 5, to improve maternal health. WPF facilitates the presentation and distribution of the State of the World Population report in the Netherlands. The press conference was chaired by Mrs. Prof.dr. I. Hutter, board member of WPF. |
