State of the World Population 2009
Thursday 19 November 2009 the launch of the State of the World Population 2009 took place.
The title of The State of the World Population, which UNPFA publishes each year, is ‘Facing a changing world: women, population and climate’.
International climate-change agreements and national policies are more likely to succeed in the long run if they take into account population dynamics, the relations between the sexes, and women’s well-being and access to services and opportunities, the report concludes.
Slower population growth, for example, would help build social resilience to climate change’s impacts and would contribute to a reduction of greenhouse-gas emissions in the future, The State of World Population 2009 found.
According to Thoraya Obaid, UNFPA Executive Director, this is of the utmost importance in view of the UN Conference on Climate Change to be held in December in Kopenhagen, Denmark. The climate debate of the future must take into account the human and gender dimensions of every aspect of the problem.
Minister Koenders, minister for Development Cooperation, received the first copy of The State of the World Population 2009 from Mrs. P. Mane, Deputy Executive Director (Programs) of UNFPA. The press conference was chaired by Mrs. Dianda Veldman, Ex. Director of World Population Foundation (WPF).
Every year WPF facilitates the launch and distribution of this report in the Netherlands on behalf of UNFPA. WPF supports projects by local organisations in developing countries enabling individuals to make their own decisions about their sexuality and the number of children they desire.
