Mainstreaming the prevention of HIV/AIDS and Sexuality Education (MAIN PHASE)

country: India

Together with Oxfam Novib, WPF is supporting 4 organisations in India wishing to include HIV prevention in their school curriculum. In order that a teaching package may be developed in a systematic manner, WPF is closely supervising the organisations for 2 years.

Following two introductory meetings, the MAIN PHASE network was officially launched at the first meeting in December 2006.
At this event, WPF provided training about sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and Intervention Mapping.

The organisations work with young people who are hard to reach, llike young people living in slums, in the Tar desert or in remote rural areas. They can also be young members of tribes with a culture of their own.

The main objective is to provide boys and girls with quality education to improve the quality of their lives, and now in the MAIN PHASE network, including knowledge on sexual and reproductive health.

The organisations in the MAIN PHASE network are:

  • Urmul Trust;
  • Centre for Youth and Social Development (CYSD);
  • Foundation for Education and Development (FED);
  • Pratham;
  • Lokmitra.

2009
These organisations aim at mainstreaming HIV/AIDS and SRHR in current sexuality education programmes for young people.
In 2009, Oxfam Novib, which funded the project, commissioned an external party to assess the project.

WPF has applied a number of the recommendations to similar courses of action, for instance: making more use of local SRHR expertise if it is available.
