Project leader WPF project Today’s Choices receives award

Dr. Petrus Steyn is project leader of the WPF project Today’s Choices in South Africa. Dr. Steyn is gynaegologist and lecturer of the Stellenbosch University in Cape Town. He recently received an award from the Curriculum Development division of the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) for his valuable contribution during the developing of the programme Today's Choices in the WCED's Life Orientation component.

Sexuality Education
The University of Stellenbosch and WPF developed the CD-ROM of sexuality education curriculum Today’s Choices and introduced it in a number of schools. It does not only explain to young people to have sex safely. They also learn about self-confidence, purpose in life, values, relationships with their parents and friends and other things they experience in their adolescence. Young people learn to decide for themselves about their lives.

Standard
The curriculum on sexuality education and aids prevention is very succesful. It is available in 4 languages. The Ministery of Education in 3 provinces was accepted as the standard school curriculum.

Award
Dr. Steyn was given the award during a WCED congress in February 2008 for focus schools on Life Orientation. He gave a lecture entitled, ‘Involvement of Parents and caregivers in sexuality education' . He is happy to receive the award but he wants to emphasize that “he wants to share this award with my colleagues who have worked together to get the end result.”
