Vincent's story about WSWM

Vincent Otieno from Nairobi: "I'm a student at the 'Bar Union' school for boys and girls and I just want to share my experience since I started learning the 'World Starts with Me' (WSWM) program on my school."

"The program has been very good and I have learnt a lot since the year begun. So far, I have gained so much knowledge on how to deal with sexual emotions, how the body changes while growing, how to react to peer pressure, how to protect myself, how to enjoy my sexuality, etc."

Talking at home
He continues: "All the members of my family are so happy that I have knowledge about what affects most of the youth in the current world. Why my family is happy, is what I like to share with you."
"First, when I did the program in school, I tried to talk about it, but my father was so against it. He was not comfortable when I was talking about sex. But I was not discouraged by his reactions since I knew that it was a high time."

Father
"My father became so happy when he came to our school on the WSWM exhibition day and I explained everything of WSWM to him trough the computer. That same evening, he called all of us of the family after dinner to the table and he invited me to talk to whole the family on issues concerning sexuality. I was very happy when I got to brief my siblings about the topic. At first they were very shy and thought that I was some how mad. I did it perfectly and carefully, that by the time I finished talking, they were still longing to hear more from me...
From that day, I act as a peer educator to my family members and since the exhibition last week I had every day a family talk about sexuality after dinner."

Advice
Vincent concludes: "I would like to tell the young people that abstinence is not a life sentence, but if you decide to become sexually active, it should be safe and consensual.
I want not only to be a peer educator to my family but also to the whole world. That is why I love so much to be in the training I am in now, where all teachers and young people are trained to be future trainers and peer educators."

Peer educator
As from 2007 Vincent is indeed a peer educator at his school, i.e. he helps his fellow students and he helps his teachers implementing the programme.
