Factsheet: Toolkit for male counseling in the context of intimate partner violence

April 20, 2009
After intensive consultations with our partner organisations from Indonesia and South Africa and with expert organisations in the Netherlands, we concluded that the involvement of male perpetrators appears vital to improve the relationships and stop the violence. Professional counselling of male perpetrators, already an activity of the partner organisations, was chosen as the new focus of our approach. By applying intervention techniques, counsellors need to be trained in helping the client change his violent behaviour and become a respectful partner.

The South African partner of WPF, Women’s Crisis and Health Centre Mosaic produced a first draft of the Training Manual, while the Indonesian partner organisations Women Crisis Center Rifka Annisa and Cahaya Perempuan Women’s Crisis Centre, with support of the World Population Foundation, drafted the versions for the counselling manual to be discussed at the fourth Partner Working Meeting planned for 2009. In 2009, a toolkit for use in the counselling of perpetrators of violence will be ready.
